How to care for costume jewelry?
How many times have you fallen in love with a beautiful ring or earrings that cost pennies but looked like they came from an exclusive window display? And how many times did that enchantment last… well, until the first contact with water, cream, or sometimes simply – air. Costume jewelry can be stunning, but to enjoy it for a long time, you need to take proper care of it.
Before we begin… a brief history of disappointment
You bought a delicate moon necklace. You wear it on a date – it's a hit. You wear it a second time – it still sparkles. But the third time… something's wrong. The golden glow fades, and your skin discolors slightly. You know that? Exactly.
You're not alone. Most of us have tried at least once to "save" our jewelry with makeup remover, alcohol, or... toothpaste. Spoiler: we don't recommend it. 🫣
Why does costume jewelry darken?
Costume jewelry, most often made of metal alloys covered with a thin layer of gold or silver (sometimes only with varnish), reacts to:
-
sweat and moisture,
-
perfumes and cosmetics,
-
water (yes, even tap water),
-
air (specifically – oxygen and hydrogen sulphide).
The result? Loss of shine, blackening, chipping, and allergies.
How to care for costume jewelry so that it stays with you for longer?
💎 Take it off before sleeping, bathing and washing your hands
This is a basic rule – contact with water and sweat is the fastest way to destroy the coating.
💎 Store it in a dry place
It's best to store them in separate zip-lock bags or boxes with compartments. This will prevent scratches and oxidation.
💎 You don't spray her with perfume!
Cosmetics first, jewelry second – never the other way around.
💎 Clean gently with a dry cloth
Microfiber glasses cloth or a special jewelry cloth will work perfectly.
💎 Wear it in turns
Don't wear the same set every day - costume jewelry needs a "rest".
Can it be renewed?
Sometimes, yes – if the color is severely worn, you can try using special jewelry polishes (available online), but the effect isn't always lasting. Therefore, prevention is better than cure.
To sum up: costume jewelry is not jewelry that will last forever – but with a little care it can last a really long time.
You don't have to spend a fortune to feel beautiful. Just… learn to care for it 💖
